My Research Notes

The majority of the notes I took during my research were on pen and paper as pictured, however I will transcribe some of the more important ones below.

Week 2

I searched the TP Library website and found three interesting books for my research.

1. Japanese Industrial History: Technology, Urbanisation and Economic Growth

2. Japanese Industrialisation: Historical and Cultural Perspectives

3. The Sino-Japanese War and the Birth of Japanese Nationalism

Foreword

I initially began my book with a foreword containing a overview into Japanese terms which the readers would encounter frequently while reading the book, however this proved to be cumbersome as the further I continued along with the writing, the more terms I felt needed to be added to this section until it became almost a chapter unto itself, and I felt that reading a whole chapter of words that you don't know before you reach the actual content itself may not make for a good read, and thus I moved this section into the Glossary at the back.

Introduction to the monetary system of Edo Period Japan

The next section I worked on was an overview of the economy and monetary system of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate in its Edo Period.

The initial source I used for the exchange rate between coins was confusing as it contained academic language which was difficult for me to understand at several points and I gave up a few times to take mental breaks. Eventually i decided to just skip this part and continue on with the book, until I managed to find an easier to understand source to complete this.
